You will probably know Jonathan Wilson as the current guitarist and singer with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters on the latest album and world tour or as the producer of Father John Misty and Conor Oberst among many others. But he has also released three brilliant solo albums on Bella Union Records. The latest, ‘Rare Birds’, is a masterpiece and a candidate for album of the year this year. It’s a double album with 13 songs playing at 1 hour and 20 minutes. I wanted to hear the album as a standard, old school vinyl album with side A and side B. Each with four songs of them and a playing time of around 40 minutes. I listened to all the tracks one by one over a period of several days (instead of listening to them in the original double album format). I then boiled the 13 songs down to eight and resequenced them with Side A and Side B opening and closing tracks. It became a new listening experience and gives an additional life to the already awesome album. A&R technically, I would release the album as you can hear it on the playlist followed by a four song E.P. with the songs featuring Father John Misty, Lana Del Rey and Laaraji. The country song ‘Hi-Ho The Righteous’ I would put out as an RSD release and the two acoustic versions of ‘There’s A Light’ and ‘Over The Midnight’ as a double a-side 7″ record. Here’s my version of the L.P.:
