Japanese mobile carrier KDDI Corp. said it would start selling the first smartphones in Japan that run on the open-source Firefox operating system beginning on Thursday.
The Fx0, to be available for ¥49,680 ($412), is manufactured by LG Electronics Inc. The device will come with a 4.7-inch display and will have a transparent gold frame designed by Tokujin Yoshioka, who has worked on products from Swarovski, the crystal maker, and fashion brand Issey Miyake.
“Openness and transparency, the most prominent features of the Firefox OS itself, are achieved in the design of the smartphone,” KDDI said.
The device is the first to combine the Firefox OS with high-speed fourth-generation, or 4G, LTE data communication services, KDDI said.
There are 16 Firefox OS smartphones in 29 countries, according to Mozilla, the organization that developed the operating system as well as the Firefox web browser
