Fifty years ago today, on 22 October 1976, Stiff Records put out the first single by a British punk band. Brian James wrote it, Nick Lowe produced it in a day at Pathway Studios in Islington, and Dave Vanian opened it with a spoken line borrowed from the Shangri-Las. On the B-side: the Beatles’ “Help!” at twice the speed. The roses are Fantin-Latour’s, a nod to Peter Saville, who put the painter’s basket of roses on New Order’s Power, Corruption & Lies.
