“This was taken in the Lutzower Lampe, a transvestite club in Berlin. Behind David is the incredibly talented Viola Scotti. ‘She’ would sing an aria from Carmen and bash everyone on the head with a tambourine, even David got hit. It was painful. The humor was great even though most of it was in German, but there were plenty of sight gags. The artists often spoke in English when we went there. Unlike most of the world, the Germans saw these clubs as normal entertainment, and whole families would come to the club with their teenage children. It was like a speakeasy there. You’d knock on a very ordinary door and a little peephole would open and someone in a deep voice said, “Jah?” That would be Daisy, the doorperson, and sometimes bouncer. Daisy never spoke in a falsetto voice. She spoke in a deep man’s voice unapologetically. What great times we had there. When we were making Low and Heroes we would visit many transvestite clubs after work. I can’t remember the name of the most famous one though.” – Tony Visconti.
